Candles and Candleholders: The Basics

Candles are simple, elegant and timeless. They can provide soft lighting for intimate moments, or even decorate a birthday cake.

Let's look at some simple candle basics.

What are candle made from?
2 simple components; your wick, and your wax (although some newer style candle can refered to as "gel" candles.

The wick supports the flame and melts the wax- the liquid wax is then soaked up by the wick and the process becomes self supporting.

Generally speaking, the larger the wick, the larger the flame- but the candle also burns quicker.

There are several different types of wax candles, Bees Wax and Paraffin are the 2 most common, but soy wax is rapidly gaining in popularity.

There are also specialty candles like floating candles, scented candles, tea lights and votive candles.
